Charnwood Borough Council is investing £200,000 to install electric vehicle charging facilities at Southfield Road Extension Car Park in Loughborough. Work begins on Monday, 7 September 2026, with completion expected by early October.
The project includes a solar canopy, battery storage system and a charging hub with 12 charging stations for motorists. The solar canopy will generate renewable electricity to power the charging facilities.
Funding and climate commitment
The funding comes through a county-wide initiative backed by Government electric vehicle infrastructure funding to increase charging points across Leicestershire.
Councillor Beverley Gray, Cabinet Lead Member for Climate Action and Net Zero, said the investment will "provide more charging facilities for electric vehicle users while supporting our commitment to tackle climate change" and is "an important part of creating a more sustainable future".
Parking arrangements during construction
During construction, a number of parking spaces at Southfield Road Extension Car Park will be unavailable. The car park will also close completely for short periods to allow safe working. Motorists are advised that parking is available at the nearby Beehive Lane Car Park during this time.
