Charnwood Borough Council Leader Cllr Jewel Miah has issued a statement following the Government's decision on local government reorganisation across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
From April 2028, the region will be served by two unitary councils. The first will cover Leicester, Oadby and Wigston, plus parts of Blaby, Charnwood, and Harborough. The second will serve the remaining area of Leicestershire and Rutland.
Council's Position
Cllr Miah said the Government did not accept the district and borough councils' preferred option for three unitary councils. Instead, it approved Leicester City's proposal to expand the City as one unitary council, with the remainder of the region forming a new larger outer unitary authority.
"With the decision made, it will take time to fully understand the implications, and I will work with other Leaders in Leicestershire and the City on moving forward with the re-organisation," Cllr Miah said.
Service Continuity and Future Plans
Cllr Miah assured residents that Charnwood Borough Council will continue delivering services to the high standards they expect while safeguarding their interests during the reorganisation process.
Cllr Miah noted that as Leicestershire County Council will cease to exist and County Hall buildings are moving within the new City boundary, Loughborough is positioned as the natural home for the new administrative centre of the outer unitary authority.
