The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council has welcomed the Government's decision to review its local government reorganisation plans for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The announcement was made on Monday 7 September 2026.
In July 2026, the Government announced plans to replace the 10 councils across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland with two new unitary councils. The Government is now reviewing that decision, along with similar decisions in other areas.
Council leader's response
Cllr Jewel Miah, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said the review was important given the scale of the proposed changes. "This is the biggest change to local government in a generation and it is important that any final decisions are taken with full consideration of the evidence and views of local councils and communities," he said.
Cllr Miah said Charnwood Borough Council had engaged constructively with Government throughout the process and would continue to do so. The council remains committed to working with neighbouring councils and partners on the matter.
Next steps
Cllr Miah plans to meet with fellow council leaders to discuss the implications of the review and possible ways forward for the area. He will also meet with Government ministers next week to discuss the matter.
